Morphing wingtip structure based on active inflatable honeycomb and shape memory polymer composite skin: A conceptual work

Morphing wingtip technology could improve the reduction of induced drag, fuel consumption, and take-off landing distances in fixed wing configurations. We describe this work a morphing winglet concept based on active inflatable honeycombs Shape Memory Polymer Composite (SMPC) skins. The combination two materials structural subsystems allow deployment, with skin able to withstand aerodynamic loading, also through use distributed pneumatic muscle fibers. An actuation geometric mechanical model that represents is developed analyzed. A prototype fabricated demonstrate kinematics concept. Experiments simulations show agreement about output angle/input pressure relationship necessary for deployment.
